Bitter Cold Arrives Tonight

A cold front is set to move through the Finger Lakes this morning. At 5am, temperatures across the region were well into the 40s, but a cold front (blue line) was approaching. This front will cross the area this morning, with some rain showers ending as a little snow. Little to no accumulation is expected from this snow. In fact, once the front clears the area, precipitation should be limited to lake effect snow east-northeast of lakes Erie and Ontario. Heavy snow in these areas will develop overnight and into Tuesday. Some places may even pick up a few feet of new snow. The rest of the region should remain dry with no new snow.Strong winds, gusting over 50mph at times in the western Finger Lakes, will turn from the south to the west as this front moves through, pushing some frigid air towards us. Temperatures this morning across Indiana are well below zero, with wind chills of -30º and colder. This is likely the air that we will have over us at this time tomorrow, with winds gusting to 30mph, temperatures below zero, and dangerously low wind chills to -30º or colder. Our drop in temperature will start this morning as the front comes through. By the afternoon, temperatures should be in the 20s across the entire region. By this evening, wind chills will start to dip below zero, with the dangerous cold moving in overnight.Schools and some organizations are already announcing closures for Tuesday.
