After a wild start to the winter, the last couple of weeks have given us a reprieve. However, as 2013 turns to 2014, Old Man Winter looks like he is planning to ring in the new year in our neck of the woods.The last two days of 2013, today and tomorrow, aren’t looking that terrible. Some light snow is falling in the Finger Lakes this morning, but should taper off by Monday afternoon to nothing more than a few flurries.After a mostly quiet overnight, Tuesday may be a bit squally at times. A disturbance, enhanced by lake effect, will move through with some brief periods of heavier snow. While accumulations should generally only be an inch or two, visibility and road conditions may become less than ideal at times as the squalls move through.Temperatures will be near 20º today, in the single digits and low teens tonight, and into the upper 20s for a time tomorrow.New Year’s Day, is looking like the calm before the storm. Lake effect should dissipate by Wednesday morning as winds shift ahead of an approaching storm system. Snow may begin to break out by Wednesday evening, but the heaviest snow will most likely come on Thursday. There is still a lot of uncertainty with this storm. For example, some models have the main storm coming from the west across our area, while others bring it from the southwest and then up the east coast. Despite these differences, both scenarios bring the Finger Lakes a decent shot of snow. More details will be coming on this storm in the next couple of days.Regardless of the path of the storm, low pressure should eventually strengthen over New England, putting us in a strong flow of cold, north winds. This will lead to some of the coldest air we have had yet this season, with temperatures on Friday falling through the single digits and lows below zero for Saturday morning.And, looking even further out, there are hints of another storm in the Sunday-Tuesday time frame next week.
