Coach Archer’s Big Red camp update #6

The old saying goes that when you watch film, it was never as good or bad as you thought. Reality is somewhere in the middle, and Saturday’s scrimmage jamboree against Alfred and Hamilton helped us split up the squad and give us an opportunity to hit someone in a different uniform. There was plenty to like – we got to put a lot of plays on film and there were no significant injuries. Playing against an opponent that doesn’t know our calls and isn’t familiar with our personnel gives us plenty of information to digest as a coaching staff. We can better evaluate what we do well and what we need to focus on getting better over the next two weeks. Even in areas that were effective in, we saw things that we’ll need to tighten up. I was pleased with our energy and focus. This is a group that enjoys playing together, and it shows.Of course, there is plenty to work on and less than two weeks from our opener against a Bucknell team that won its season debut this past weekend at home against Marist, 27-14. The coaches will start looking at that film and formulating our gameplan, but we’ll ask the team to continue to concentrate on ourselves in practice. We’ll have our last intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday and simulate our season opener as much as possible, then turn our attention to the Bison. I hope you’ll be able to join us for Homecoming. It will be a great opportunity to see former classmates, teammates and friends – and some great football.
