At least 8 or 9 boats were on the horizon and they had less than ten minutes to reach the pier heads at Sodus Bay. It was a race to the finish line and the 6 to 8 foot swells smashing into the bows of the boats sprayed water like Moses opening the sea. It’s exciting…It’s Pro-Am fishing at Sodus Point. Once again weather played the important role for the two day tournament which was held at Sodus Point July 20-21st. Friday evening after the official Captain’s meeting a micro-burst from a cold front hammered lake shore communities. It toppled the Pro-Am tent, twisting the aluminum poles like rubber bands. Out on the “high seas” of Lake Ontario the 43 competing teams endured their own weather-related problems searching for trout and salmon during the 2013 Sodus Pro-Am. “The fishing was tough,” was the word from all the teams. Captain Randy Calus and his “Sure Strike” team from Rochester battled the waves near Pultneyville and his two day score of 411.95 landed him a first place finish in the Pro Division of the tournament. (Scores are based on 10 points per fish and 10 points per pound.)
