Mother Nature has certainly tested the patience of the NYSGA throughout the first round of the 2013 Men’s Amateur Championship. Extreme storms swept through the Albany area Monday night, followed by heavy rain early Tuesday morning, causing the first round to be delayed by three hours. By mid-morning on Tuesday however, it seemed we had our share of torment as the clouds opened up and sunshine prevailed!Regardless of the saturation, the course at the Schuyler Meadows Club, host of the 2013 NYS Men’s Amateur Championship, played well-enough to yield several low scores across the leader board, including a 4-under par round (68) posted by Victor Fox (Normanside Country Club), current first round leader.“The course played a little bit easier than the practice round yesterday,” said Fox. “The rain obviously helped soften up the greens, which helped the wedge game.”Fox began his round on the back nine posting a 3-under par (32) at the turn and continued his charge on the front nine posting a 1-under par (36). Collectively, he carded six birdies, two bogeys and the rest par. When asked about the element of his game he relied upon most in Round 1, Fox credited his tee-ball“The rough is really gnarly here so if you miss a fairway is it tough to hold the green,” said Fox. “So, I chose a club that gave me the best opportunity to hit the fairway.”Looking forward to Round 2, the game plan for Fox will change only slightly, if at all. “It depends on if we get rain tonight but it will be a guess as to what happens on the first hole tomorrow,” said Fox. “Either way, that hole will dictate the last 17 holes of the first two rounds.”Tied for second overall is Trevor Sluman (Oak Hill Country Club). Sluman posted a 2-under par (70) in the first round. Were it not for the double bogey on nine, his last hole of the day, Sluman would hold a share of the lead with his Round 1 playing partner and overall leader, Fox.Due to the rain delay today, not all players were able to finish their first round. The conclusion of round one will begin Wednesday morning at 7:00AM. Tee-times for round two will begin 90 minutes after the originally scheduled times. For more information about round two, including pairings and LIVE scoring, visit the NYS Men’s Amateur webpage.
