Red Cross 5K Set For Newark in June

It’s time to think about getting out those running shoes again. This year’s Market Alternatives Run for the Red, a benefit 5K for the American Red Cross, will be held on Saturday, June 8 in front of the Wayne County Chapter in Newark. The race is celebrating eight years of successful fundraising for the American Red Cross by adding a French toast breakfast to the day’s events. The breakfast, which features French toast, sausage, fruit, and orange juice, milk or coffee, is $5 for all-you-can-eat and is open to the public.“Whether you’re running or watching, you can enjoy a delicious carbo-load,” said Jim Love, Executive Director of the Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross. “We’re happy to provide this new added benefit to being part of the race and the proceeds continue to help support the good work that we do in the community.”As in years past, the race, which is sponsored by Market Alternatives, begins at 9:00 a.m. with registration opening at 8:00 a.m. The top male and female finishers will receive $50 in cash prizes and a medal; additional place medals for the top finishers in each age group will also be given. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. near the finish line.Runners and walkers are both welcome to enjoy a tour through the idyllic village of Newark. Registrations can also be made at the Wayne County Chapter of the Red Cross, which is located inside St. Michael’s Episcopalian Church at 400 South Main Street in Newark.Immediately following the Market Alternatives Run for the Red 5K, the family entertainment continues with St. Michaels Parish Family Festival and the Newark Elks Lodge Barbeque.
