Shots fired in five-hour Fleming stand-off

Cayuga County Sheriff David Gould reports that at 3:09 pm this date the Cayuga County 911 Center received a call regarding a suicidal subject that was possibly in possession of firearms. The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police responded to the scene at 5662 Poplar Cove in the Town of Fleming. ThompsonArriving Law Enforcement Officers encountered Brian R. Thompson age 51 of that address outside the residence armed with a single shot shotgun. Thompson fired one round from the shotgun and retreated into the residence.Several other units responded to the scene and negotiators from the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office established communication with him. The negotiations lasted several hours during which time Thompson fired 3 more rounds, some outside and some inside the residence.Thomspon exited the residence several times throughout the negotiations process, sometimes armed with the shotgun and sometimes without however continued to retreat back inside each time.At approximately 8:15 pm Thompson exited the residence unarmed at which time a “less lethal” device was deployed temporarily incapacitating him. An arrest team comprised of Cayuga County Sheriff’s Deputies and SWAT personnel along with members of the Auburn Police Department’s SWAT team then took Thompson into custody. Thompson has been transported to University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment of non life threatening injuries which he received during the arrest process.Thompson will be arraigned upon his release from the hospital on the following charges:Menacing a Police Officer- felonyCriminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree- felonyThe investigation is continuing.
