Mynderse late run not enough; Blue Devils lose, 53-47

Head coach Mike Fields’ Mynderse boys varsity basketball team would return to the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester on Saturday for the third time in 8 days. This time, with a trip to the state Class C Final Four in Glens Falls on the line. The opponent, the Silver Creek Black Knights out of Section 6. The Black Knights stood at a perfect 22-0 on the season and as the players warmed-up, it was clear they would enjoy a noticeable size advantage. Mynderse brought an 18-5 record into the game and hoped to continue a post-season run that included 2 wins on route to beating Avon in the Class C1 Sectional Finals, and two wins against Clyde-Savannah and Lyons respectively to claim the Class C berth into the state tournament.Mynderse was able to gain confidence early by jumping out to an early lead on the bigger Silver Creek squad, but the Black Knights used a 17-7 advantage in the 3rd quarter to take control, and eventually hold on for a 53-47 win. The Silver Creek victory ended the Blue Devils season and propelled the Black Knights onward to Glens Falls where they are now just two game away from a Class C State Championship.Billy Brook opened the scoring for Silver Creek but it was Mynderse senior center Connor Miller who paced the Blue Devils early. With Silver Creek double-teaming Mynderse’s PF Luke Ruddy, the lane was open for Miller to do damage. Miller ended up with 8 first half points on 4-9 shooting. The Mynderse front court was also effective on the boards against the bigger Black Knights with Miller grabbing 6 first half rebounds and Ruddy pulling down 5.Mynderse senior point guard Brandon Passalacqua was also key in the early going helping Mynders handle Silver Creek’s tough man-to-man and occassional 3-2 zone defense. Passalacqua contributed 8 first half points as Mynderse took a slim 25-24 point lead into halftime. There wasn’t much in the way of substitutions in the first half, or the entire game for that matter. Silver Creek never subbed. Mynderse put in Jared Coffey for Miller for about 30 seconds in the 2nd quarter. That was the only sub for the Blue Devils all game as well. The start of the second half would be all Silver Creek. After Passalacqua scored his 10th point of the contest to open up second half scoring, the Black Knights went on a run that would put them ahead by as much as 13 points early in the fourth quarter.Mynderse wasn’t done yet, however, as Luke Ruddy buried a big three pointer to get them back into the game. On the following Silver Creek miss, Jason Anderson misssed a transition layup but Jimmy Ricci was ther efor the putback to bring Mynderse back to within single-digits. Then, with just under 4 minutes remaining in the contest Luke Ruddy scored and was fouled. He made the free throw and Mynderse was back to within four. On the ensuing possession for Silver Creek, Zed Williams scored and was fouled, missed the free throw, but had his team back up six, 49-43.With Silver Creek maintaining a six point lead under one-minute in regulation, Mynderse saw two three point attempts by Luke Ruddy and Jason Anderson go in-and-out and the frustrated Blue Devils had to watch as the clock counted down to end their season. For Silver Creek (23-0), it was on to Glens Falls behind 13 points from Billy Brook, 12 from Steve Marcey, and 9 from Zed Williams. For the Blue Devils, their season ends with an 18-6 mark and a Section V Class C Championship. Brandon Passalacqua played his last game in a Mynderse uniform capping a spectacular four-year varsity career that included 3 sectional titles. He would finish with a game high 15 points. Senior Connor Miller would end with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Fellow senior Jimmy Ricci would finish with 7 points. Junior Luke Ruddy had 10 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.Mynderse Head Coach Mike Fields will appear on the Weber on Sports show on FingerLakes1.TV live at 9:30 am on Monday morning.
