Mynderse wins third sectional title in four years

After last year’s upset loss to Wellsville in the semifinals, Mynderse Academy senior point guard Brandon Passalacqua was not going to let history repeat itself as he led his Blue Devils to the Section V Class C1 Championship on Saturday afternoon, defeating Avon 65-45 at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY. It was the third sectional title for Passalacqua in his exceptional varsity career. For Mynderse coach Mike Fields and the Blue Devils, it was the third sectional title in the past four years and the 8th in school history.Mynderse humped out to an early lead and never looked back behind great team shooting, inside and out, and a solid defensive effort that held #5 seed Avon to just 34% shooting.Passalacqua finished with 11 points and 4 assists, doing most of his damage while driving the lane and either scoring or finding fellow senior Jimmy Ricci who knocked down a trio of three pointers en route to a 13 points night. Ricci and Passalacqua were also active on defense combining for 10 steals, 6 and 4 respectively. On the interior, junior power forward Luke Ruddy faced more double and sometimes triple teams but was still able to lead the Blue Devils with 18 points. Senior center Connor Miller was also the beneficiary of the Ruddy double-teams as he was able to score 8 points and pull down 11 rebounds. Miller scored 6 straight points to end the third quarter and put the game out of reach for good. Small forward Jason Anderson added 12 points and the Blue Devils coasted to a 20 point victory and the title.Mynderse Boys Varsity BasketballMynderse (16-5) will now face Clyde-Savannah in the state qualifier play-in game on Monday night.
