Geneva tops Wayne to cap perfect FL East season

The Geneva Panther had already wrapped up the Finger Lakes East title when they defeated Newark last week in Geneva. Still, with a trip to second place Wayne on Thursday night, Geneva had a chance to complete the entire season in the tough FL East with no blemishes on their record.The Panthers did just that, disposing of the Wayne Eagles 72-63 to finish their regular season at 16-0 in the league and 17-1 overall. Their only loss coming at the hands of Aquinas, a team they could potentially face in Class A Sectionals which begin next week.Senior point guard Shane Sweeney led the Panthers with 20 points while his senior backcourt mate Jordan Donahue added 17. Junior Simms and Akia Jackson both notched 10.For Wayne, who finishes their regular season a 15-3 (2 losses to Geneva and a loss to Newark), they too look ahead to Sectionals where they could face Geneva a third time.Tre Lamora scored 17 points in his final regular season game but junior Mike Hollenbeck led all Eagle scorers with 20.Geneva coach Brian Miller said after the game, “Now the real fun begins. Won’t be easy at all.” Miller was referring to the very tough Section V Class A bracket ahead as the Panthers go for an elusive Sectional title.
