Geneva will be hosting the 2nd Annual North Seneca Rail Jam on March 2nd. A rail jam is a freestyle skiing/snowboarding competition, in which participants slide down a slope onto an elevated rail or “feature”, performing various tricks and combinations along the way. The rail jam will feature local, regional, and national snowboarders and skiers participating at various skill levels. The event will be held at 305 Main Street, between Seneca and Castle Streets on the site of the old Gigliotti’s gas station. The event is free to attend and open to the public. To participate in the competition, contestants can register online at www.flxsb.com or in person at Joe’s Hots in Geneva 315.759.6006.”I’m really stoked for our second year,” says co-organizer Joe Marone “because of the excitement and love the riders and everyone involved are showing. This might possibly be the best party Geneva has seen in a long time!”The Rail Jam will begin at 1 pm with warm ups, and the competition will start at 3 pm. As with last year, there will be a live DJ and MC present. This year’s DJ is Tim Tones from Rochester, NY and the MC is Paul Szmal from the Finger Lakes Radio Group. This year’s Rail Jam promises to be a significant step up from last year’s event. Co-organizer Jason Rogers states, “This year is all about bigger and better. We have multiple large features presented on a more professional level, and above all, more community support.”This year’s event will benefit from some major sponsorship, including the primary sponsor Burton, one of the leading manufacturers of snowboard equipment and apparel. Also, GnarBear will be providing custom features. “The support of Burton and GnarBear gives us the ability to add to the production value of the event,” says Rogers. “This is only our second year. Having them on-board lets us know we are going in right direction and will help us develop the Rail Jam in more professional ways, as well as open it up to a wider audience.” Trophies are being forged by the Finger Lakes Railway, and other sponsors include Vere Sandals, Joe’s Hots, The Wall 99.3, WFLR/WNYR, Shuttleworth Asphalt Sealing, Bristol Mountain, Zonk Productionz, Geneva Community Projects, Guardian Glass, Stomping Grounds, Lewis Electric, Lyons National Bank, Microclimate Wine Bar, Level One Construction, and the Geneva Recreation Center.A fundraising after party is scheduled for 9 pm at Microclimate Wine Bar on Linden Street. There is a $10 suggested donation for the after party, with the proceeds benefiting the Finger Lakes Skate Boarding Club. Live music will be provided by BLEO (Brady Leo, one half of Shrimps).
