Empire State Carrying Championship coming in June

Carrying ChampionshipYou may have seen a news clip on Good Morning America or watched a video on YouTube. But now you can see it LIVE right here in the Finger Lakes. The first Generations Bank Empire State Carrying Championships will be held on June 30 at Ventosa Vineyards, starting at 3 p.m. and continuing on into the night with an After Party. The event is presented by Finger Lakes Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Fingerlakes1.com. Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross in the Finger Lakes and Beverly Animal Shelter. Just how does a Carrying Championship work? Teams of two – either coed, all male, or all female – one running and one being carried, navigate through an obstacle course. The team with the best time wins the carried person’s weight in wine or grape juice. There are two age groups – 16-20 year olds will compete for grape juice and teams age 21+ will compete for the carried person’s weight in wine, up to 150 pounds.Carrying TechniquesThe Generations Bank Empire State Carrying Championship will be run on a 375 yard course on uneven terrain through the vineyard. A series of obstacles will include a water obstacle at the end of the course.“We are challenging police departments, fire departments, school athletic teams, and fitness folks to compete for bragging rights,” said race director Jen Stanton. “There are many techniques for carrying your partner – over the shoulder, upside down, piggyback – get creative, get ready and get out there.!”Entry fee is $65 for pre-registration and $75 after June 25. Registrations may be made online at www.empirestatecarryingchampionship.com. Registration includes participation in the race, tickets for the buffet, and admission to the after party with live music by the DirtyBirds. Party passes for the buffet and after party are available for $15, available only until June 25. Children age 10 and younger are free. Spectator admission is free. “This is sure to be a fun, family-friendly event,” said race chairman Mark Benjamin. “Ventosa Vineyards overlooking Seneca Lake is a beautiful venue and the competition is going to be hilarious. We hope scores of teams will participate and hundreds of people will come out to cheer them on.”Sponsorships are available.
