Let’s Garden Workshop at Vince’s Park

Beat down those winter blahs and start getting ready for spring! The Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension (SCCCE) Master Gardeners have organized a day of speakers, food and gardening information to help you prepare for the 2013 gardening season. The workshop will be held Saturday, March 2nd at Vince’s Park Pavilion, corner of State Route 318 and State Routes 5&20, Seneca Falls from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Price for the workshop is only $30.00. There will be plenty of coffee, tea and refreshments for the morning break and a homemade buffet lunch at noon. Participants will also receive handouts, free seeds and valuable gardening information from some very knowledgeable speakers. There will also be a question and answer session with Master Gardener volunteers and door prizes.The first workshop, “Home Composting: The Green & Brown Alternative” starts at 9:15AM with Mary Schwarz, an Extension Support Specialist for the Cornell Waste Management Institute at Cornell University. Mary will share information to make composting work for you. After a brief coffee break, “Special Plants to Add to Your Landscape” will be the featured topic from Jana Lamboy, who taught horticulture classes at FLCC and now grows and sells cut flowers. Jana will give participants ideas to add color to their yard year round using interesting trees, shrubs and perennials. A lunch break, featuring homemade soups, fresh salad and great homemade desserts is followed by “Gardening With the Three Sisters: A Traditional Practice Still Relevant Today” with Jane Mt. Pleasant. Jane is an associate professor in the Department of Horticulture at Cornell University. Jane will offer a historical perspective on Iroquois agriculture and suggest ways you might adopt some of the principles of this traditional cropping system in your own garden. The day concludes at 2 PM with a Q&A session, door prizes and evaluations. All monies raised are used to support the Master Gardener program at SCCCE, a not-for-profit educational system. Interact with other gardeners and start preparing for your spring gardening projects. Registration by February 28th is encouraged as space is limited.
