On October 5, 2012 at 5:00 PM, the City of Ithaca and the Downtown Ithaca Alliance will host an unveiling of a mosaic mural on the Seneca Garage by Annemarie Zwack, a local artist who specializes in large-scale community collaborations. Entitled Feels Like Home; Spirit of Ithaca, the 6’x13′ mosaic of handmade ceramic and glass tiles depicts Cayuga Lake at sunset with a trio of canoers, a series of waterfalls, local fossils, and a bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables. The piece will be mounted on the Tioga Street side of the parking garage between the car and pedestrian entrances. Zwack was awarded a grant from the ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes; this grant paid for the fabrication of the substrate made by Tim Merrick Construction. Councilman Eddie Rooker was instrumental in securing additional funding from the United Way and the New York State Urban Council, and many local volunteers pitched in to help grout and polish the mosaic as a part of Mayor Svante Myrick’s “Ithaca Is Community” initiative on Earth Day.
