Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike announces a partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and with TOPS Friendly Markets and Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association to participate in the Nationwide Prescription Drug “Take-Back” Day for the collection of unused prescription drugs at “free” drop-off site Saturday, September 29, from 10AM – 2PM at the TOPS Market parking lot at 321 Liberty Street, Penn Yan, N.Y.During this initiative Sheriff’s deputies will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at this site, free and anonymously, no questions asked. This is a “drive-up – drop off” type event.“This partnership with DEA and with TOPS Market is important for the community in order to prevent increased pill abuse, misuse and theft, while addressing a vital public safety and health issue, and preventing the environmental issue of flushing drugs down the toilet” said Sheriff Spike, “We must continually form community partnerships and use all resources to combat the misuse of narcotics and stimulants and I thank TOPS for their site collaboration and then Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association .”This will be the fifth event held in Yates County since 2010. All drugs collected will be turned over to the DEA and taken for immediate legal destruction. “This is a great opportunity for those who have accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, in cupboards or drawers to safely dispose of them.”
