Interlaken man charged w/ forged VIN & inspection

Sheriff Deputies report that on Thursday night at about 9:50 pm they arrested Gregory A. Whitley, age 22, of Interlaken, NY for felony Possession of a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and displaying a Forged Inspection Sticker and unlawful possession of marijuana. The charges stem from a traffic stop that was conducted in the Town of Ovid. During the stop it was discovered that Whitley had a smoking device that contained marijuana. Upon further investigation the VIN that was displayed on the vehicle was different from that which was registered with New York State DMV.A check on other VIN’s on the car showed that two more were present. A loose VIN plate which was removed from a previously owned vehicle was located in the car with the VIN that appeared on the registration document. The inspection sticker was also tampered with and came from a vehicle which was going no longer on the road.It is alleged that Whitley removed the inspection sticker from the old vehicle and affixed it to his car with clear tape in order to display a 2013 sticker.Whitley was issued appearance tickets and is to appear in the Town of Ovid Court before Judge Van Cleef on October 2nd 2012 at 10:00am to answer these charges. NY State Police are assisting in the identification of other VIN’s and further charges are pending.
