The Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve and Environmental Education Center, in Seneca Falls, received a Design by Nature award at this year’s Northeast Sustainable Communities Workshop. The workshop, which was held in Midtown, New York City in June, was coordinated by the Brownfields Coalition of the Northeast, a not-for-profit organization comprised of industries, regulatory agencies, and consultants committed to advancing brownfield redevelopment in the Northeast. Award criteria included:Projects that respect and attempt to integrate natural systems in any built system,Projects that attempt to use living system principles in the design of the project,Projects that restore nature, andKey values: restoration, using natural principles to replace mechanical systems, resiliency, local or neighborhood scale.The Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve, located on Black Brook Road in Seneca Falls, offers 8 miles of hiking trails that are open to the public daily, from dawn to dusk.
