Elmira hand Newark Pilots second straight loss

The Pioneers fought off the rain and a Newark Pilots team that would rally in the ninth inning Thursday night at Dunn Field. Elmira would build up a 10-5 lead heading into the ninth inning only to see Newark tie up the game and the Pioneers pick up a 11-10 victory on a walk-off double by Landon Prentiss (VCU).Elmira would jump out in front of Newark in the first inning as Spencer Brann (UC Davis) picked up his third home run of the season off of Newark starter Ethan Humbert (RIT) to make it 2-0 Elmira. The Pilots would answer with two runs of their own in the second inning to tie up the game.The Pioneers would regain the lead in a back and forth affair in the bottom of the second as Corey Hamula (Sullivan County C.C.) drove in two runs on a ball laced into center field to make it 4-2. Elmira would add to their lead in the third as Prentiss drove in his first two runs of the night on a well hit ball to the outfield making it 7-2.After both teams traded runs in the middle innings it would be the Pilots who would try to mount a comeback in the ninth inning as they would score five times off of Elmira reliever James Yacabonis (St. Joe’s) to even the score at 10-10. Elmira would be up to the challenge though in the bottom of the inning as Clark Wise (Wofford) drew a leadoff walk. Wise would move over to second on a sacrifice bunt and score two batters later on a ball blooped into center field by Prentiss.
