Albany tops Newark in Saturday night shoot-out

The Albany Dutchmen (10-10) avoid a late comeback by the Newark Pilots (12-9) and win the game by the score of 12-9 Saturday night at Colburn Park.The Pilots took to the scoreboard first as they took the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning: Newark was able to score all of their runs with two outs in the inning. With a man on second base, catcher Adam Grace (Erie C.C.) lined a single into right-center that allowed Sean Osterman (St. John Fisher College). Soon after with men on second and first, the second baseman Phillip Flach (Samford University) singled into right field driving in Austin Logan (UC Davis) for the run.After a slow start, Albany got their bats going in the top of the sixth. Outfielder Morgan Phillips (College of Charleston) started things off by singling in Adam Young (UC Davis). Sam Few (Samford) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Jack Wietlispach (Parkland) to score. To cap off the inning, catcher Ryan Gasporra (Centenary) smashed a ball over the center field wall, for a three run home run that gave the Dutchmen a 5-2 lead.Albany built a commanding lead in the top of the eighth inning, as they added five runs to give them a 11-3 lead. With one out in the inning, Wietlispach started things off by singling in Ben Douglas (Southern Idaho) to score. During that play a wild throwing error by Newark allowed Young to score. Remillard was able to get on base due to a throwing error by the third baseman; that error allowed Wietlispach to score. Remillard later scored in the inning after another Pilots’ error was committed.Newark made some noise in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Ben Bostick (St. John Fisher College) flied out to center allowing Josh Perez (Mississippi College) to score on the sacrifice.With two outs, Brent Langston singled in Crowdus. With bases loaded, Logan worked a walk allowing Osterman to score. Grace extended the scoring spree by smashing a double into right-center allowing Tyler McDonald (Millersville University) and Logan to score.Derek Dallas (UT-Dallas) took the mound for the Pilots in a losing effort. In his five and one-thirds inning pitched, he gave up five runs, two earned, on 4 hits while striking out six and walking four. Andrew Furber (Cloucester County) earned his win of the season for Albany. The righty pitched five and two-thirds innings giving up two earned runs on seven hits while striking out and walking two. Trevor Lacosse (Bryant) earned his third save of the year for the Dutchmen. The lefty worked one and one-thirds innings allowing no hits and walking two while striking out one.The Pilots will travel to Watertown on Sunday to take on the Wizards at Duffy Fairgrounds at 5:00 p.m.
