Seneca Meadows Receives Excellence Award – FingerLakes1.com Archive

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) announced Tuesday that the Seneca Meadows Landfill has been awarded its 2012 Gold Excellence Award for Landfill Management.SWANA’s Excellence Awards Program recognizes outstanding solid waste facilities that advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound waste management through their commitment to effective technologies and processes in system design and operations, advancing worker and community health and safety, and implementing successful public education and outreach programs. Programs also must demonstrate that they are fiscally and environmentally responsible through their compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations.Tom Hasek, Environmental Engineering and Compliance Manager for Seneca Meadows will be accepting the award on behalf of the company at a ceremony in August. “Seneca Meadows is a forward thinking company,” said Hasek. “In many aspects of our operations, we surpass the regulations, such as, being the first waste management company in New York State to voluntarily retain a leak location detection company to inspect our liner for defects; installing thermal electron automated radiation monitoring units at our scales to ensure that no unauthorized, radioactive materials enter our facility; and implementing e:DAT and e:Monitoring geographic information system document/photograph management tools to more effectively analyze the high volume of environmental monitoring data that is collected on a daily basis at our site.”Seneca Meadows was also recently awarded Audubon New York’s Donald G. Colvin Conservation Award for the company’s preservation and advancement of the environment. Other honors bestowed to Seneca Meadows include the “Seneca County Business of the Year,” the Rochester Business Journal Environmental Leadership Award, and a U.S. Congressional Proclamation for its commitment to preserve and protect the environment.“It’s a great honor for our company to have been chosen from among all of the considered waste management facilities in the U.S. and Canada for the Gold Excellence Award,” said Don Gentilcore, Area Manager for Seneca Meadows. “We have an incredible team of men and women who consistently bring innovative ideas to the table to enhance the environmental controls and operational efficiency at our facility. The SWANA Gold Excellence Award serves to confirm their efforts and give them the recognition they’ve earned.”The awards and trophies will be presented to all recipients of the Excellence Awards at SWANA’s annual national conference, WASTECON, in Washington D.C. during the Awards Breakfast on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Centre.
