The Cooperstown Hawkeyes (4-7) defeat the Newark Pilots (6-5) by the score of 3-2 last night at Colburn Park.Cooperstown started the game off by taking a 3-0 lead in the first two innings. In the top of the first with Jacob Hubert (Laredo C.C.) on second base, Ty Morris (Cal State Monterey Bay) was able to send in home after hitting a double to the right field wall. Morris was able to make his way home after a wild pitch. In the top of the second, Cooperstown extended their lead 3-0. With Chris Blanton (Cal State Monterey Bay) on third, Quinn Pippin (Tulane) was able to drive him home on 4-3 groundout.Phillip Flach (Samford University) took the mound for the Pilots in a loss. After allowing three earned runs on two hits to the Hawkeyes in the first two innings, the righty pitched six scoreless. His line for the night totaled eight innings, three earned runs on two hits while striking out three and walking four. Austin Logan (UC Davis) and Josh Perez (Mississippi College) each had a hit and a RBI in the game.In the bottom of the fifth, the Pilots made some noise to get themselves onto the scoreboard. After a Sac-bunt by to get runners into scoring position, Perez was able to drive in Sean Osterman (St. John Fisher College) home making the score 3-1.In the bottom of the eighth, newcomer Logan blasted and RBI double into right field allowing Joe Landi (University of Rhode Island) to score. With runners on second and third and two outs, Osterman battled through an intense at-bat, fouling numerous balls before he watched strike three cross the plate.Daniel Hyatt (Louisburg) earned his first win of the season for Cooperstown. In seven innings of work, the righty gave up one run on three hits while striking out six and walking four. James Norwood (St. Louis) earned his first save of the night. Morris, Blanton, and Matt Carr (New Paltz) combined for Cooperstown’s three combined.The Pilots and Hawkeyes are scheduled for a double header on Thursday at Doubleday Field. Game 1 will start at 2:00 p.m. as a make-up from the June 9 rainout.
