The Seneca County Sheriffs Office reports, Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to 2107 Bromka Road, Romulus, NY for the report of a barn fire. Upon Deputies arrival, the barn had open flames protruding from the roof. The Romulus Fire Department was first on scene and began to attempt to extinguish the flames. They were assisted by the following fire departments; Varick, Ovid, Lodi, Fayette, and Interlaken. The barn owner, Samuel Kanagy age 42 stated that the barn was estimated in value at $50,000 and that it was insured through Amish fire insurance. The cause of the fire was determined to be misuse of a lighter by one of Kanagy’s children. The barn was a total loss. The firefighters battled the blaze for over three hours. Due to the extensive manpower used in the fire, Sheriff Stenberg authorized the use of Seneca County Correctional Facility Inmates to assist the fire departments with the rolling hoses, putting them back in service on the trucks and general Fire Department cleanup efforts.
