Anthony Road Winery wins Australian gold

Anthony Road Wine Company went to the other side of the world to win a Gold Medal for its 2008 Martini Reinhardt Selection Riesling Berry Selection. (cq) The Finger Lakes wine captured the prize at the 12th annual Canberra International Riesling Challenge in Australia, held Oct. 3 through 8. The mRiesling-only competition is billed as the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting entries from all over the globe. The competition in Canberra is considered one of the toughest in the world, Jim Trezise, president of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, said on the foundation’s The Wine Press on the web. Seven judges tasted more than 440 Riesling wines from 10 countries, including Germany, the United States, Austria and New Zealand, according to the competition’s website. Ken Helm, chair of the challenge, said in a news release that the judging of wines from each region across all countries highlights the unique characteristics of the individual regions. “This is a major feature of the Canberra International Riesling Challenge in its promotion of Riesling as the pre-eminent white wine of the world,” he said. Anthony Road’s 2008 Martini Reinhardt Selection Riesling Berry Selection is named after Peter Martini, the winery’s vineyard manager, and JohannesReinhardt, Anthony Road’s winemaker. The winery’s tasting notes describe the wine as follows: “Prominent characters are luscious pear, honey, mango and rose petal in the nose. This dessert wine has flavors of baked fruit ­ apple & pineapple. Light honeydew melon characters are also evident in this wine’s smooth, subtle finish. Enjoy with dessert or as dessert!
