Rooster Hill wins six medals at classic

Rooster Hill Vineyards’ wines won a Double Gold Medal and five other awards at the New York Wine & Food Classic in Watkins Glen on Aug. 15 and 16.Rooster Hill’s 2010 Estate Medium Sweet Riesling won a Double Gold Medal at the event. The wine’s grapes are grown and produced at Rooster HillVineyards, on the east side of Keuka Lake.Double Gold awards require a unanimous vote of judges in the Classic competition, which had 741 entries from all regions of New York State.Rooster Hill president and co-founder Amy Hoffman said the winery is particularly proud of the Double Gold award because the Riesling is of a newer vintage ­ 2010. “We are pleased that it showed so well after being bottled just recently,” Hoffman said.Rooster Hill wines also received three Silver Medals and two Bronze Medals at the Wine & Food Classic.Silver Medals went to the winery’s 2009 Late Harvest Vignoles, the 2009 Traminette and the 2009 Estate Cabernet Franc. The Bronze Medal winners were its 2010 Dry Riesling and Rosecomb Red. The Wine & Food Classic, which is sponsored by the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, is open to all 307 New York wineries and is in its 26th year. A total of 726 New York wines and 15 spirits were entered in this year¹s competition, held at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel. At the event, Martha Clara Vineyards’ 2010 Riesling from Long Island won the Governor’s Cup trophy. The Winery of the Year award went to Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars of Lodi in the Finger Lakes.Rooster Hill’s Double Gold-winning Riesling will be among the top wines to be tasted Aug. 26 at the Celebrate the Classic 2011 event at the New YorkWine & Culinary Center in Canandaigua. Only wines winning awards of Gold and above at the Classic will be featured at the event. Tickets are $30.Recipes by local chefs will be prepared to pair with the wines. A private tasting for media and trade will take place from 3 to 4 p.m., with general attendance from 4 to 7 p.m., according to the Culinary Center’s website.The New York Wine & Grape Foundation, along with Finger Lakes Wine Alliance, Finger Lakes Wine Country Tourism and the New York Wine & Culinary Center, sponsors the tasting event. Rooster Hill Vineyards is located at 489 Route 54, near Penn Yan. The tasting room’s hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. andSunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
