PENN YAN, NY (Monday, Aug. 22) Anthony Road Wine Co. won a batch of medals at the New York Wine & Food Classic in Watkins Glen on Aug. 15 and 16. Leading the parade of winning wines were the 2008 Tierce Riesling and the 2008 Riesling Trockenbeeren, Martini-Reinhardt Selection, both of which won Best of Class awards and received Double Gold Medals. The Tierce Riesling was chosen as the Best Dry Riesling in the statewide competition and the Riesling Trockenbeeren was named as the Best Late Harvest Wine. Anthony Road shares the honors for the 2008 Tierce Riesling with two other Seneca Lake wineries Fox Run Vineyards and Red Newt Cellars. The wine is the result of a collaboration by Anthony Road winemaker Johannes Reinhardt, Fox Run winemaker Peter Bell and Red Newt winemaker David Whiting. The Wine & Food Classic is sponsored by the New York Wine & Grape Foundation and is open to all 307 wineries in the state. A total of 726 New York Wines and 15 spirits were entered in this year¹s competition, which was held at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel. Anthony Road’s 2010 Gewurztraminer received a Gold Medal at this year’s event. The winery¹s other awards included Silver Medals for each of three wines: the 2010 Dry Riesling, Tony’s Red, and the 2007 Tierce Red, another collaboration of ³Tierce brothers’ Reinhardt, Bell and Whiting. This year’s awards were based on tastings by 21 expert judges, four from California, nine from New York, six from other states and two from the United Kingdom. At the event, Martha Clara Vineyards’ 2010 Riesling from Long Island won the Governor’s Cup trophy. The Winery of the Year award went to Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars of Lodi in the Finger Lakes. Among other winners in the competition, Fox Run Vineyards received a Best Limited Production Wine award for its Fine Old Tawny Port.
