In the weeks ahead, families from all across our region will begin to get their children ready for school. For many parents, however, “back to school” time can be a difficult process. With the high cost of clothing, school supplies and other related expenses, it can be daunting to prepare a child for the school year ahead. That is why I wanted to remind you that New York State has eliminated the four-percent sales tax for clothing and footwear items under $55. This means that clothes and shoes that cost less than $ 55.00 are exempt from New York State Sales Tax. I fought hard to re-establish this exemption, and I am pleased it has been reinstated to help hard-working families who are trying to make ends meet.Ensuring a safe school environment for our students is also one of my top priorities. I am pleased to inform you that Governor Cuomo has signed into law legislation that I strongly supported to expand the list of crimes that would disqualify an individual from being allowed to drive a school bus. This important new law will help to ensure that our students are protected from potentially dangerous individuals throughout the school year.As always, I wish all of the students returning to school and their families a safe, happy and successful year of learning!
