Geneva PD expects more arrests in check scheme

Geneva – The four arrested on felony fraudulent check cashing charges may just be the tip of the iceberg. This according to local officials who are now expecting six to eight more arrests and additional charges against those already arrested. The four, three from Rochester and one from Canandaigua were arrested by Geneva City Police Wednesday on Class D Felony charges and were in Geneva City Court Thursday. They were assigned attorneys, had bail continued and will reappear next week for preliminary hearings.Lt. Eric Heieck of the Geneve PD said ” The indications are they are part of a bigger check cashing ring”. Heieck also said that the State Police and Postal Police are involved and the U.S. Attorney’s office may be getting involved. Heieck also said the four arrested Wednesday drove to Geneva several times and cashed illegally printed and reproduced payroll type checks at small local businesses. He said an undercover operation caught them trying to cash checks at Saglimbeni’s Liquor Store on North St. in Geneva.Heieck said a mastermind in Rochester was stealing payroll checks and using modern technology to “wash” the official markings and reproducing the checks to match the names of people with valid ID. The head of the operation would take a cut of the checks and the others would keep the rest.. Heieck said that several counties are involved and that Geneva area businesses are out some $10,000 from the scheme. In city court Thursdfay, Asst. DA William Hart argued to keep the bail set by Judge Buckley. He also said the arrests are the tip of the iceberg in terms of people involved and number of incidents.Anyone who may have cashed suspect checks are asked to call Geneva Police.
