Sheriff David Gould reports that The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent drowning at West Barrier Park in Fair Haven.At about 5:30 pm on Tuesday, July 26th a call was made to the Cayuga County 911 Center from the Fair Haven State Park Police of an unconscious person. Initial callers were off-duty life guards in the area.Shaylean S. Richards, age 32, Oswego was at West Barrier Park with a friend and 7 children ranging in age from 5 to 13. The children were swimming in Lake Ontario and the adults went in to assist them as it appeared the waves were pulling them from shore and they were struggling. Once back to shore, the victim’s 13 year old son noticed she was motionless in the water. With the assistance of other adults near by Shaylean was pulled from the water and CPR was initiated; EMS continued en route to Oswego Hospital where she was pronounced dead.West Barrier Park is across the channel from Fair Haven State Park.
