Head on crash in Tyre due to distracted driving

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a two car head-on personal injury motor vehicle accident on Route 318 in the Town of Tyre on Monday afternoon. A vehicle being operated by Jeffrey J. Schmitz, 22, of 6683 Beech Tree Road in Auburn, New York, was westbound on Route 318 when he became distracted with a GPS device. Schmitz crossed the center line and struck an eastbound vehicle head-on. The second vehicle was being operated by Challis R. Ryan, 27, of 4275 Henderson Place in Syracuse, New York.Schmitz suffered a shoulder injury and was transported to Auburn Memorial Hospital by North Seneca Ambulance. Ryan was uninjured in the collision. Both vehicles were extensively damaged and were towed from the scene. The Seneca Falls Fire Department and Magee Fire Department also responded to the scene. Schmitz was ticketed for Failure to Keep Right and Operating a Motor Vehicle while Operating an Electronic Device.
