Seneca Literacy names Volunteer of the Year

Tom Crocker of Lower Lake Road, Seneca Falls, has been selected Volunteer of the Year by Literacy Volunteers of Seneca County. Crocker has been a member of the Board of Directors and a tutor with the organization for six years. He will be among the volunteers honored at the annual United Way Volunteer Recognition Dinner at 7 pm Feb. 15 at the Holiday Inn.As a Literacy Volunteers board member, Crocker has worked on drafting long range plans, developing volunteers and helping the organization with its 5-year accreditation survey. As a tutor, he has worked with several Asian students, helping them learn English and becoming American citizens.“I initially became a Literacy Volunteer because I enjoy reading,” Crocker said. “When there was a need for a tutor for English As a Second Language students, it seemed to be a good fit for me because of my experiences living in other countries as a child, youth and adult.” After serving in the US Army, Crocker was a systems analyst and project leader at Eastman Kodak for 20 years. He then served for 10 years as a supply chain consultant for national and international businesses for 10 years. During that time, he worked in China as a consultant for two international companies, including a four-month assignment in Shanghai.Crocker also is active with American Red Cross in the Finger Lakes, currently serving as its board president. He is co-coordinator of the local Disaster Action Team, of which he has been a member since 2005. He is a member of the New York State Red Cross Disaster Consortium, representing the Rochester region, manages the Red Cross New York State Neighborhood (website) and has deployed on several national disasters, notably Hurricane Kattina. Tom and his wife, Cathy, have delivered Meals on Wheels for the Red Cross since 2003.Crocker is a member of the Delavan Foundation board and has served as a community representative on the Seneca Falls School District for four years. He also has served as a volunteer for the VFW Christmas dinner for five years.He and Cathy have a son, Alan, in Houston, TX, a stepson, Adam, in Steamboat Springs, CO and a stepdaughter, Chris, in Galveston, TX.
