Praise for Rooster Hill Vineyards Gewürztraminer

A visitor from Wine Spectator says plenty of good things about Rooster Hill Vineyards and its 2008 Estate Gewürztraminer.Senior editor Dana Nigro also says she is impressed by how the quality of wines continues to rise in the Finger Lakes region.Nigro, who is managing editor of WineSpectator.com, described her local visit in a Nov. 1 posting on the magazine’s Web site:”A group of my family members recently spent a week in New York’s Finger Lakes, hiking the gorge trails, biking, kayaking and, of course, visiting the local winery tasting rooms. Impressed by how quality continues to rise in the region, we all came back with more wine than we intended to buy, though certainly a fair amount never made it out the door of our rental house, polished off rapidly by the 10 of us as we ate dinner while watching the sun set on Keuka Lake.””A while after we got home, my dad first opened some of his purchases during his birthday celebration. We started with the 2008 Gewürztraminer ($16) from Rooster Hill, one of the Keuka Lake wineries that impressed us with its solid lineup of whites and reds (and its knowledgeable and friendly tasting-room staff). This dry white, which comes from the winery’s 4-acre Catherine’s Vineyard, showed Gewürztraminer¹s classic rose petal and lychee character, along with peach and citrus flavors and a savory note on thefinish.”The posting also noted that for dinner, the group moved on to the 2009 Dry Riesling ($15) from Dr. Konstantin Frank, a Finger Lakes pioneer and a popular stop on the wine trail along Keuka Lake. Nigro also praised the Dr. Frank Riesling. “Now I’m really looking forward to working my way through the mixed cases I bought,” Nigro says in the posting.The two Finger Lakes white wines were featured in the “What We’re Drinking Now” section of WineSpectator.com, under the headline “Drinking Local: Two New York Whites.” Nigro joined Wine Spectator, the nation’s preeminent wine magazine, in 1998.This is not the first time that a Rooster Hill Gewürztraminer has tasted success. The winery’s 2009 Estate Gewürztraminer won a Gold Medal and was chosen Best of Class at the Long Beach Grand Cru Wine Competition in California in July of this year.Rooster Hill co-owner Amy Hoffman said Nigro’s praise continues a growing recognition of the quality of wines being made in the Finger Lakes, noting that Wine Spectator critic James Molesworth also has extolled the virtues of Rooster Hill wine and others from the region.”Our winemaker, Barry Tortolon, is doing great things with our Gewürztraminer and other wines,” says Hoffman. “It’s great to see the top wine magazine put a spotlight on his creations.”
