Seneca Lake Pure Waters Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting for Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association will be held on Wednesday, August 18th from 6:00-9:00 PM at the Harbor Hotel, 16 N. Franklin Street, Watkins Glen, NY. The Association’s largest public meeting each year, members and the general public are invited to attend this special evening on Seneca Lake. Our guest speakers will discuss the potential impacts on Seneca Lake of the anticipated increase in natural gas drilling in the watershed: Dr. Ron Bishop will be speaking about natural gas extraction from shales, with updates on technologies, economics and politics associated with this industry, and suggested action items for concerned citizens”. Dr. Adam Law will be speaking on the potential health effects of natural gas drilling. His interest in unconventional natural gas drilling was triggered at the end of 2009 when patients started asking him about the dangers of high volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing and its effects on health – particularly the effects on endocrine disruption. A reading of the available evidence has convinced him that there is insufficient scientific information on the health effects of natural gas drilling and that there should be a moratorium on the basis of the Precautionary Principle. He has inspired the physicians of Tompkins County to take a public stand on this issue. First, by a unanimous vote of the Tompkins County Medical Society in favor of a moratorium at their annual general meeting; Second, 70 physicians signed a petition that has been published as an advert in the Ithaca Journal and also sent to local and state officials.Dinner will be served at 6:30 PM, a business meeting will begin at 7:30 PM, and the keynote presentations will begin at 8 PM.
