Jennifer Call to Receive Scholarship Award

Seneca Falls, NY – Jennifer M. Call has grown up on a farm, helping with field and office work at My-T Acres vegetable farm in Batavia, NY. She says operating her own fresh strawberry business with her sister Krista Call for four years taught her business and customer relation skills and a good work ethic. This summer, Jennifer is taking college classes in addition to working at an ice cream stand before she heads off to Cornell University to study agriculture. On August 11, she will add to her list of farm and food-related activities as she is honored as the 2010 Empire State Potato Growers Scholarship Winner at the 2010 Empire Farm Days. Jennifer will receive her award as part of the Ag Leaders Luncheon at the event at the Rodman Lott & Son Farms in Seneca Falls. The Empire State Potato Growers annually select an undergraduate student residing in and attending college in New York State to receive a $500 scholarship per academic year for up to four consecutive years of agricultural education. Jennifer, a June graduate of Oakfield-Alabama Central School, will enter Cornell in August 2010 to major in agricultural science. She is a National Honor Society member and has taken active leadership roles in 4-H, Student Council, the Youth to Youth program, and her church youth group. She participated in high school athletics as an athlete and a cheerleader. “I am looking forward to exploring all the options offered by Cornell’s Agriculture and Life Sciences program. I am interested in operating my own agri-business and in agricultural policy making,” Jennifer says. “The Empire State Potato Growers’ annual scholarship honors an outstanding student who is ready to make a strong positive impact on the agricultural industry and has a bright future ahead. Jennifer has combined her farm background with a strong self-motivation to succeed at operating her own strawberry business and we are happy to support her agricultural educational and career aspirations,” says Empire State Potato Growers Scholarship Chairman John Meyer. The nonprofit Empire State Potato Growers association represents New York’s commercial potato growers.
