On Saturday, July 10, Ganondagan State Historic Site will host “Trails and Tales at Ganondagan.” This family-oriented event is part of Ganondagan’s summer-long outdoor recreation and education program taking place on weekends. “This is a great program for families and anyone who loves the out-of-doors and animals,” shared Ronnie Reitter, one of Ganondagan’s site interpreters of Seneca heritage. Ms. Reitter will take participants on a walk around Ganondagan’s easiest upper trail, The Earth is Our Mother Trail, sharing Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) legends about the four-legged and winged creatures that live in this part of the United States. “ There’ll be plenty of photo opportunities with the life-like animals that will be waiting for us on the trails, and we’ll show families how they can take photos, write the legends they’ve heard, and turn them into their own book that kids love to hear again and again,” shared Ganondagan’s Executive Director, Jeanette Miller. “It’ a great way to encourage literacy!” Ms. Miller wrote a book for her niece and nephew called Angel & Kalen’s Four-legged Friends that was published earlier this year and that inspired the idea to offer this event. The program will be run from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants should allow about 1 ½ hours and meet at Ganondagan State Historic Site’s Visitors Center, located at 1488 State Rte. 444, Victor, NY. Participants are advised to wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water. The fee for this event is: Friends of Ganondagan Members $3, Member families $10; Non-Member individuals $5, Non-member families $15. (Appropriate for all ages). Registration is limited to 25 participants, so advance registration is highly recommended. For more information or to register, visit www.ganondagan.org/events.html or call 585.742-1690.
