Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike reports that the Monroe County Medical Examiner has positively identified the body found by Sheriff’s Deputies April 2, 2010 floating in Seneca Lake near Perry Point as that of ALFONSO J. WHITFIELD, JR. age 26 of Geneva, NY a missing person since last April 6, 2009 having fled the scene of an assault by stabbing his pregnant girlfriend that occurred on Castle Street in Geneva. Geneva Police obtained a warrant for his arrest for Attempted Murder 2nd degree. He has been featured on the America’s Most Wanted television show. The ME’s office did forward a section of the body’s leg along with a section of the foot found floating in a sneaker April 1 by Geneva police at the North end of Seneca Lake to the state crime lab in Albany for DNA analysis. This was a positive match as was DNA taken from Whitfield’s son. Thus, positively identifying Whitfield as the body in the lake and of the missing foot limb. Whitfield according to Geneva Police Chief Frank Pane was last seen in the Castle Street creek area that leads to the lake, and this waterway had a swift moving current April 6, 2009 and empties into Seneca Lake. The body in the lake was badly decomposed and missing some limbs, etc. and given the condition likely floating in the lake for over a year. Whitfield was a black male large build 6’3” and weighing 255 lbs. Perry Point is located in the Town of Torrey, Yates County some 14 miles South of Geneva, NY. The cause of death is still pending further examination by the ME’s office and remains under investigation by the Geneva Police and the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.
