Local B&B has the Right Recipe for Success

If you saw the movie Julie & Julia, you will appreciate why Barrister’s Bed & Breakfast has been selected as Seneca County Chamber’s April Business of the Month. This stately B&B is located in the Village of Seneca Falls. Three years ago Ken and Diane McConnell, formerly of California, set out exploring B&Bs with the desire to purchase the business of their dreams. Their quest ended in Seneca Falls, when they fell in love with Barrister’s, and the community. The house was built in 1860 by Charles Weed and his wife Sarah. It was designed with fine details like quarter-sawn oak paneling, carved oak mantels, graceful stained glass windows and expansive porches. When Ken and Diane purchased it in 2007, they were only the 4th family to own the property since 1860. Of the previous men in the house, four of the last five were attorneys – hence the name Barrister’s. A barrister is an old English name for a lawyer. Ken has a passion for cooking which started years ago from being involved with his mother’s restaurant business. “Cooking is a tremendous joy and outlet for me,” Ken says. “We’ve been cooking and entertaining our family and friends for many years and now we want to share that hospitality with our guests.” Ken and Diane create many of their own recipes and take special pride in serving their guests. Some of these recipes are so popular; they are posted on their website, www.sleepbarristers.com. There may even be a cookbook in the making.Ken’s background as an information technology project manager has brought a wealth of knowledge to managing and marketing Barrister’s. Diane’s management and creative background adds the right mix of ingredients to make a stay at the inn a delightful experience. Ken and Diane go the extra yard when it comes to pampering their guests. If they happen to find out a guest is celebrating a special occasion like a birthday, the guest will find a small birthday cake in their room when they arrive. Ken and Diane are also happy to serve vegan, vegetarian, gluten free or other dietary required dishes. Diane said, “The best compliment we could have is when our guests say they feel like they are at home when they are here.” The couple is active in the Finger Lakes Bed & Breakfast Association, Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance, Seneca County Chamber of Commerce, Seneca Lake & Cayuga Lake Wine Trail Associations. They firmly believe that their success is due to their commitment to service and comfort. And their future growth requires networking with the area businesses, local attractions, and packaging unforgettable experiences. For the business’s success and growth, the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize Barrister’s Bed and Breakfast as its April Business of the Month. The Business of the Month is sponsored by the Finger Lakes Times.
