Sophomore’s Artwork Selected for Arts Festival

The artwork of Keuka College sophomore Crystal Cochell will serve as the face of the 2010 Keuka Arts Festival. The visual and verbal art major’s design was selected as the winner of the Keuka Arts Festival’s poster contest, and will be used to advertise the festival as well as be featured on the commemorative t-shirt.“Crystal’s poster was selected because of its colorful execution and theme,” said Paulina Garces Reid, marketing chair for the Keuka Arts Festival. “We liked the artistic representation of the Finger Lakes area.”Cochell, a Trumansburg native, entered the contest at the encouragement of Instructor of Art Melissa Newcomb. A pen and ink sketch she completed over the summer served as the inspiration for the poster.“I’ve always admired the landscape of New York,” said Cochell, whose previous sketch featured rolling hills of the area with vines at the top. “I noticed that the vines looked similar to grapes vines, and I continued the vines downward.” Cochell received the first copy of the finished poster, an invitation to the artist reception prior to the weekend festival, a guarantee of booth space at the June event, and a t-shirt.The Keuka Arts Festival is a juried fine arts and skilled craft show, along with local wines, farm produce and culinary fare. The festival will feature live entertainment and activities for families and will be held June 12-13 along the Keuka Lake Outlet trail at the Penn Yan boat launch site.
