Enactment of Health Insurance Reform Law

Organizing for America (OFA)-New York Director Melissa DeRosa released the following statement after President Obama signed health insurance reform legislation into law today:“This is a historic day for the United States of America and for New York. For too long our country toiled along with a broken health insurance system in which too many Americans were either uninsured or held hostage to insurers’ unfair practices, as costs were going out of control and the deficit rose.“But today, as President Obama signed health reform into law, the path was laid to ensure that real change comes for Americans struggling with the skyrocketing cost of care. Reform will put Americans before insurance companies, care before profits, and the will of the American people before Washington politics. Today the American people won.“I am proud to say that OFA supporters in New York and throughout the country played a major role in the push for health insurance reform. Even when it looked like the old voices of Washington politics had the upper hand, we didn’t stop. We kept fighting. We took on this fight for the mother who cannot insure her child due to her preexisting condition. We took on this fight for the retiree who needs to break their medication in half to afford it, for the family who had to declare bankruptcy due to medical debts, for the couple who are forced to drop their coverage due to rising premiums, and for the countless New Yorkers and Americans without health insurance.“We fought for health insurance reform because it’s the right thing to do. And today, in this victory for the American people, I am proud to say that we are part of history.”
