Legislation Exempts Schools From Fees For Hazardous Waste Cleanup(Albany, NY) – Today, the Senate Democratic Majority passed legislation (S5991) sponsored by Senator Antoine Thompson (Parts of Erie and Niagara counties), Chair of the Environmental Conservation Committee that will create an exemption from certain special assessments, fees and surcharges resulting from the cleanup of hazardous waste generated by or at an elementary or secondary school. “The health and safety of our children is of paramount importance,” Senator Thompson said. “As more becomes known about the dangers of exposure to environmental hazards like lead and mercury, more and more schools are undertaking remediation activities. Exempting schools from the fees and surcharges associated with the cleanup of these materials incentivizes them to conduct remediation efforts and ensures a healthier environment for our kids to learn and grow in.”
