PENN YAN Anthony Road Wine Co. had a sparkling day in the Florida sunshine Saturday, winning a Double Gold Medal and two gold medals. Anthony Road¹s 2008 Dry Riesling captured a Double Gold Medal at the Florida State Fair International Wine and Grape Juice Competition in Tampa. The winery¹s 2008 Martini-Reinhardt Riesling Berry Selection and its 2008 Gewurztraminer both received Gold Medals at the Florida competition, which ended Saturday (Feb. 6). The Anthony Road Dry Riesling¹s prize was among 13 Double Gold Medals won by New York State wines at the competition, according to the New York StateWine & Grape Foundation. New York wines also won 27 Gold Medals, 97 Silver Medals and 72 Bronze Medals at the event, the foundation said. New York wines received a total of210 medals in a competition that included 1178 wines from 32 states and nine foreign countries. Last year, Anthony Road¹s 2008 Semi-Dry Riesling received the prestigious Governor¹s Cup, the top prize among 805 entries at the 2009 New York Wine &Food Classic competition in Watkins Glen. Anthony Road Wine Company has been making Riesling and other Finger Lakes wines since1990, when Ann and John Martini opened their winery on thewestern shore of Seneca Lake with wines crafted from the 1989 crop. Anthony Road is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
