Bath, NY, January 27, 2010: If you think homelessness is a “Big City” problem, think again. Starting January 28th, and ending February 3rd, a count of the homeless, conducted by public and private human service agencies, will extend across Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Allegany counties. The goal of the “Point-in-Time” study, which will involve dozens of agencies across the region, is to help these agencies understand the level of need within the region for programs and services that target the homeless, as well as those who are at risk of becoming homeless. The information gathered will be used to design a regional plan to decrease homelessness in the region, and will serve as a basis to submit future funding applications. Participating agency staff and volunteers will conduct a brief confidential survey with individuals and families who utilize participating emergency shelters, soup kitchens, drop-in centers, and other similar services. Participation in the survey is voluntary and does not impact the individual’s eligibility to receive services. Anyone wishing to participate in the survey, or wanting more information, may call 2-1-1 Helpline, just dial 2-1-1.
