Helping Haiti Telethon Till 7pm Tonight

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Friday, January 15, 2010 – The Greater Rochester community pledged more than $65,000 by 10 am today through the Helping Haiti telethon at the Greater Rochester Red Cross. Phone lines opened at 6 am when WROC TV 8 kicked off day two of the fund raiser to help the 3 million people impacted by the earthquake in Port-au-Prince.“The local community has really come through for the people of Haiti and the American Red Cross,” said John Buttrill, CEO of the Finger Lakes Region of the American Red Cross. “Their support is helping the hundreds of thousands of people now homeless receive food, water, medical supplies and emotional support.”The American Red Cross warehouse in Panama has been emptied of its supplies of kitchen sets, blankets and water containers. Two Red Cross planes have arrived in Port-au-Prince carrying 80 tons of supplies mainly medical items, including specialized kits to help treat the wounded, basic medications and chlorine for water treatment.All of the donations made to the International Response Fund will go to Haiti to provide these additional emergency services and supplies.
