Astronaut to speak October 3 in Seneca County

On October 3, 2009, Space Shuttle Commander Sidney “Sid” Gutierrez (Colonel USAF, Retired) will be describing his experiences as a NASA Astronaut aboard two of the most exciting missions in Space Shuttle history during “Evening with an Astronaut,” a community educational speaking event organized by the Barry Porsch for D.A. campaign.A veteran of two space flights, Col. Gutierrez has logged over 488 hours in space. He was the pilot on the Space Shuttle Columbia during a nine-day mission dedicated to studying how the human body adapts to the microgravity environment of space. On his second flight, Col. Gutierrez was the spaceship commander aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. This 11-day flight was dedicated to the study of the earth’s environment and atmosphere.Gutierrez is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, a former fighter pilot and test pilot. He retired from NASA and the Air Force in 1994.”Evening with an Astronaut” will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the Holiday Inn, 2468 Mound Road, Waterloo. Tickets to the event may be purchased for $10 each at the Porsch for D.A. Seating is limited. If any tickets remain, they may be purchased immediately prior to the event at the door.Additionally, a reception with Col. Gutierrez that will benefit the Porsch for D.A. campaign will be held on Saturday, October 3rd from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Hotel Clarence, 108 Fall Street, Seneca Falls. Reception tickets may be purchased for $99 each from any of the above individuals or at 80 Fall Street.
