Reading Week at Frank Knight in Seneca Falls

Frank Knight Elementary School in Seneca Falls, New York, will be celebrating their 26th annual Reading Week May 11th through 15th. The theme for this year is Be Like Marley… Devour a Good Book. The featured illustrator is Richard Cowdrey. He has illustrated John Grogan’s Marley series including Bad Dog, Marley! and A Very Marley Christmas. This year our week has become a community event which includes three levels of community reading, the Seneca Falls Library’s Children’s Book Festival on Saturday, May 9, and a collection for the Beverly Animal Shelter. Monday, May 11- Students will meet Mr. Cowdrey and every student will receive an autographed hardcover copy of the book he illustrated, Bad Dog Marley donated by Frank Knight Parent’s Team and several local businesses and associations. The community is welcome to attend.Tuesday, May 12- Read-a-Shirt day and teachers will read a story to a different class during the teacher exchange. Wednesday, May 13- Wacky Wednesday – Students will wear clothes inside out and backwards. Local veterinarians Dr. Greg Johns and Dr. Carl Darby will be in to speak to the students about pet care.Thursday, May 15- Students will bring a stuffed pet to school. From 2:00 until 2:30 Amylynn Marley’s eighth grade class will come in to read stories they wrote to each class. Friday, May 16- If the children meet their reading goal, our Principal will spend the day in the dog house. At 10:00 students will be treated to a surprise event that will include the principals from Frank Knight and Cady Stanton Schools.There will be fun activities daily. These include:*Each classroom will have a guest reader from our community. *Students may bring in books to exchange at the Book Exchange.*Students will turn off the TV and read at home to try to meet the Principal’s challenge.*Students will collect food, blankets and money for the Beverly Animal Shelter.Our School will be decorated with a dog theme. Students will wear student designed T-shirts and buttons. It should be a “paws”itively fun week of reading, writing and illustrating!
