When the local community kicks off the Independence Day holiday with fireworks on the night of July 2, Cayuga Radio Group and The Ithaca Journal will be saluted.A special round of fireworks from atop Ithaca College’s South Hill campus will honor The Ithaca Journal and radio stations WHCU, WYXL, WNYY, WQNY, and WIII. Both organizations have helped promote the fireworks shows, and representatives of these two local media serve on the volunteer committee that organizes the annual shows, according to committee chair Fran Benedict.“Back in 1947, when the first community fireworks show was held in Ithaca, the late Sam Woodside, sports director at WHCU, was instrumental in organizing the event,” Benedict explained. “The radio station and the Journal have been involved ever since, and we truly appreciate their support.”
