Portion of Route 96 renamed for Memorial Day

Citing the important role of Waterloo as the birthplace of MemorialDay, State Senator Michael Nozzolio and State Assemblyman Brian Kolb todayannounced that a portion of State Route 96 in Seneca County has beendesignated the ‘Waterloo-Birthplace of Memorial Day Highway’. SenatorNozzolio and Assemblyman Kolb sponsored legislation designating thehighway and successfully worked to ensure the measure was enacted by thelegislature and signed into State law.“This new law will dedicate the ‘Waterloo – Birthplace of Memorial DayHighway’ and pay tribute to the National recognition Waterloo has receivedas the first community to hold an annual Memorial Day ceremony,” saidSenator Nozzolio. “It is important that we honor and thank our veterans forthe sacrifices that they have made to keep our country free. This highwaydesignation will help serve as a daily reminder and a lasting tribute tothe debt of gratitude we owe our veterans.”State Assemblyman Brian Kolb said, “By designating this section of Route 96as Waterloo: Birthplace of Memorial Day Highway, the residents of SenecaCounty, along with anyone else who travels this highway will recognize theNational historical importance of Waterloo as the birthplace of MemorialDay. It is an honor to have sponsored the legislation to make thisdedication a permanent part of Waterloo’s history.”The portion of State highway that will receive the honor runs along StateRoute 96 from the Town of Phelps to the Town of Ulysses. A formal ceremonyannouncing the designation will be held at a date to be announced later.
