Enter Celebrate/Commemorate Essay Contest

How do you welcome home our soldiers who have served in the war? That’s the question local students are invited to answer for the annual Celebrate Commemorate essay contest.Chairman Patsy Amidon said the essay contest asks students to think about ways to show respect and gratitude to our men and women in the military who have served their country and returned to their communities.“During Celebrate Commemorate Memorial Day we show our respect for those soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom,” she said. “But every day, soldiers come home who have served in the war. Some are injured, but most are not. They deserve to be honored for the heroes that they are.”Students should submit their essays sharing their ideas before the May 9 deadline. Essays should be turned in to the student’s English teacher or school office. Home schooled or other students may submit their essays to the Waterloo Library.Essays must be typed, double spaced with the student’s name and grade on the back. Students in grades 3-5 should write up to 100 words, those in grades 6-8 should write up to 200 words, and high school students in grades 9 -12 should write up to 300 words.Two winners from each grade will receive a $50 savings bond. Winning essays will be laminated and on display in Lafayette Park during the summer.Some students will be asked to read their essays at the awards ceremony on Thursday, May 22 at 1:15 in the High School Auditorium. Parents and friends are invited. It is sponsored by the American Legion, VFW, Waterloo Educators Association, Waterloo Retired Teachers and MRB Group and attracts more than 300 entries annually.
