Ithaca Waterfront Ride & Run This Weekend

They may look tough and rugged on their motorcycles, but this group has a heart of gold. Motorcyclists from throughout the region will converge on the city of Ithaca, NY this coming Saturday, September 23rd, to make the 80 mile (approximate) trek around Cayuga Lake to raise funds and collect toys for the Toys for Tots campaign.Motorcyclists led by Police Chief Kenneth Lansing of the Cayuga Heights Police Department and WOWBOB (Work Out Women Babes on Bikes), will pause for the National Anthem and the blessing of the bikes at 11 a.m. and begin their trek promptly at 11:30 a.m.“The motorcycle trek is one piece of a larger event,” remarked Deb Noonan, one of the primary organizers of the event. This year’s Ithaca Waterfront Ride & Run to benefit Toys for Tots – a fun, family-centered benefit for and about children – will start at 9:00 a.m. at Fisherman’s Pub (300 block of Taughannock Blvd., across the street from Island Health in Ithaca), with a delectable breakfast. At 12:30 p.m. runners will assemble at Cass Park to begin a 5K run.At 1:00 p.m., a one mile fun run and walk begins. The run/walk’s theme is FAMILY! Children, Grandparents, Parents, Uncles, Aunts, Brothers, Sisters – everyone who can walk, run, ride a wheelchair, walk with a walker, or any other type of non-motorized transportation is welcome to take part in this event. “The first word in the run/walk is, FUN, and we intend to pursue having FUN throughout the day,” said Noonan.Just as the motorcycle riders are returning, around 2:00 p.m., the morning’s events will culminate with a Chicken BBQ and live music. The day’s events will end at 6:00 p.m.“We came up with the idea for this ride while volunteering and working with children’s organizations and seeing the remarkable difference a toy can make in a child’s life. Some of us who work in the health care field have found that a simple toy can literally save a child’s life,” said Noonan. Deb went on to say, “We met with the Marine Corps organization, based in Binghamton, for assistance and support with our local event. Our aim is to turn this year’s event into an annual event.”Several local organizations have lent support to this group’s efforts by donating prizes for the afternoon raffle and money. Volunteer and donation support is still needed. All revenues raised will go directly to Toys for Tots.To volunteer or donate time or money, please call Deb Noonan at 607-227-7724 or e-mail, nunu924@aol.com
