Ithaca College grad in running for new reality show

An Ithaca College graduate is one of the semifinalists vying for a lead role on Broadway on the NBC reality show “Grease: You’re the One that I Want.” Kevin Greene, who earned his degree in musical theater in 2006, is competing against five other contestants to land the role of Danny in the planned revival this summer of the Tony Award–winning musical.Airing on Sunday evenings, “Grease: You’re the One that I Want” is a talent competition series in which viewers will choose the leads for a new Broadway production of “Grease,” a love story set at the fictional Rydell High School of the 1950s. The show auditioned hundreds of actors and actresses for the parts of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski, selecting several dozen to advance to “Grease Academy,” where they trained with Tony winner Kathleen Marshall, who will direct and choreograph the production.The initial group was cut down to 24 after demonstrating their talents in front of an audience that included performers connected with both the stage and film versions of “Grease.” On the most recent episode, six Danny’s and six Sandy’s were selected to reach the semifinal round—Kevin Greene among them. Over the next six live episodes, the viewing audience will get to vote on who should be knocked out of the competition until there is one pair left.A native of—we’re not kidding—Greece, New York, Greene has been working as a bellhop at a Manhattan hotel while auditioning for theater roles. While at Ithaca College, he played Kenickie in a 2005 Ithaca College Theatre production of “Grease.” His other stage appearances included roles in the Shakespeare comedy “Twelfth Night” and Neil LaBute drama “The Shape of Things.”“Grease: You’re the One that I Want” is hosted by television personalities Billy Bush and Denise Van Outen. In addition to Kathleen Marshall, the judges are “Grease” cocreator Jim Jacobs and British theater producer David Ian.
