Local Red Cross Helps Snowbound in Buffalo

Our neighbors in snowbound Buffalo can rest a little easier thanks to American Red Cross in the Finger Lakes.On Sunday, the local Red Cross chapter sent 100 cots and 100 blankets to the Greater Buffalo Red Cross Chapter to be used in a shelter for people who have had to leave their homes following the big snowstorm last week.The call for help came at 9:45 a.m. Sunday.”The Northeast Service Area Response called on us to assist in sheltering residents who were affected by the Northwestern New York Storm,” said Cheryl Hoggard, local Disaster Services Chair. “We were happy to respond.”Within two hours Disaster Action Team chairs Tom Crocker and Rick Luce had located a rental truck and enlisted the help of Chris Lashbrook, Dan Emmo, Darrell Hoggard and Kathie Crocker to help load it, and, joined by DAT member Tony Muscolino,were on their way to deliver the cots and blankets to a shelter in Buffalo. Hoggard said the local chapter has additional cots and blankets available to assist in the event of a local emergency. Eventually, thenational Red Cross will replace the cots and blankets sent to Buffalo.Executive Director Dale Wright said the local chapter is prepared to respond to help in an emergency either at home or throughout the country. “When you need us, we’re there,” she said.To learn more about volunteering for the Red Cross Disaster Action Team, contact American Red Cross in the Finger Lakes at 315-569-9436 or 315-789-1522.
